Auto Transport Glossary of Terms:

BILL OF LADING:

The Bill of Lading is an important document and is the receipt for your vehicle and the contract for the transportation thereof. It is your responsibility to understand the Bill of Lading prior to signing it.   If you have a question or do not understand something on the Bill of Lading do not sign it until you have resolved the question and are satisfied with the contents of the document.

BINDING ESTIMATE:

This is a binding agreement made with the carrier in advance of the shipment. This guarantees the total charges of the transportation of the vehicle based on services and conditions stipulated on the estimate.

NON-BINDING ESTIMATE:

This estimate is the Carrier’s approximation of charges based on the estimated weight of the shipment and accessorial services requested.  This estimate is not binding on the carrier and the final charges will be based on the actual weight and tariff provisions in effect.

CARRIER:

The mover providing transportation of your vehicle.

C.O.D.

Cash to be paid upon delivery of the vehicle at the time and destination per the agreement.

ORDER FOR SERVICE:

This document authorized the mover to transport your shipment.

ORDER NUMBER/ BILL OF LADING:

This number is used to identify and track your shipment

PEAK SEASON RATES:

These are higher line haul charges that are applicable during the summer months

PICK UP AND DELIVERY CHARGES:

These are separate transportation charges applicable for transporting your vehicle between SIT (Storage in Transit) and your designated place of delivery

SHUTTLE SERVICE:

The use of a smaller vehicle to accommodate the delivery to the residence when not accessible to the Carriers normal, larger linehual equipment.

STORAGE-IN-TRANSIT (SIT):

Temporary warehousing of your shipment pending further transport.  This can occur if the carrier has been unable to reach up to 24 hours prior to delivery.

TARIFF

The Carrier’s required, published price list of rules, regulations, rates and charges for the performance of interstate transport services.

WAREHOUSE HANDLING:

This is an additional charge applicable each time SIT service is provided.  This charge compensates the Carrier for the physical placement and removal of items within the warehouse.
